Teen boys will certainly find a gem if they pick this one up. I don’t see that much young adult fiction from the male perspective, written by a male author. I rooted for Hampton the whole time, just hoping he would find happiness and make the right choices. I really liked this author’s writing style and the compelling character he created in Hampton Greene.

I was grateful to learn about a part of the country I didn’t know much about. We’ve all met characters like these in our own high schools, but Oklahoma was such a change of pace for me. Hampton must decide whether to back up his day-one companion to the end or if being loyal means putting Blaine in his place with some tough love. He starts acting recklessly, drinking and driving, threatening his girlfriend, and getting into more fights. Tension builds when Blaine realizes that Hampton is the true star of the football team, with more fans, more recognition, and more chances for a college scholarship. Sara understands this part of him, even though his friends make fun of him for being with a girl like her. He is not the stereotypical jock, but he has a spiritual side and enjoys nature. Hampton can be more open with Sara than he can with anyone else. They find themselves in the same group for a history assignment, and really hit it off. His teammates try to set him up with the hot, popular girls but he is more interested in quiet, smart Sara Reynolds. Blaine also plays on the Kennisaw Knights, but a bum knee has left him bitter, angry, and jealous of his loyal pal, Hampton.Īs talented as he is at football, Hampton is clueless when it comes to girls. His friend, Blaine, introduced him to football and he credits Blaine and his father with all his success. However, on the home front, his dad walked out and his mom basically leaves him to raise himself.

He has the uncanny ability to predict the other teams’ plays and interfere with them. The narrator of the story, Hampton Greene, is the star linebacker on the Kennisaw Knights football team. The characters felt so real to me, and the setting just wrapped me up so I was completely transported to the Kennisaw High School football stadium every Friday night, cheering for the Knights. I’m not an avid football fan, but this book as helped me to appreciate the sport and learn more about it. This book was one of the best young adult books I’ve ever read.
